Regular people don’t think too much about messaging apps they use. They just stick to whatever their friends and family are active on. I was that regular person until a friend of mine introduced me to Telegram to gather feedback for her product. Since 2015 I’ve been hooked to it.
If you care even a little about your digital privacy or, want some time off WhatsApp yet stay connected, consider switching to Telegram and nudge your favourite people to get on the platform.
Mandatory trivia: Telegram was developed by the brothers Nikolai and Pavel Durov in 2013 who had previously developed Russia’s most popular social network Vkontakte (VK).
First off, Telegram brings a whole new level of product thinking that’s not merely a rip off of WhatsApp. I’d go on a limb to say that unlike most messaging apps, Telegram deeply cares about humanising software. You see this ethos reflected in all their updates. That very much sums up why I love the product. I’m not going to be comparing it with WhatsApp but I’ll just leave a few questions that could help you figure out if Telegram is a perfect match for you.
Do you wish to send files WITHOUT COMPRESSING?
Every time I hang out with friends and indulge in clicking pics, I’ll be that annoying person reminding them to send pictures. When they do send the compressed ones over WhatsApp, I’ll again ask them to send it via Google Drive or Google Photos. (making them think twice about inviting me the next time.)
If you’ve ever been this demanding person like me, Telegram makes it super easy to decide whether you want to share image and video files as it is or not. You can even send a heavy PDF file of a book and read it right within Telegram.
DO YOU WISH TO NOT SAVE IMAGES TO YOUR GALLERY?
This one’s for folks in the family who frequently run out of space in their phone gallery. With Telegram, they can simply view images directly from the Telegram app without having it take up needless space in the phone gallery. What’s more? They can also set images shared over the chat to auto-destroy within a timeframe.
DO YOU WISH TO ADD YOUR ENTIRE COLLEGE TO A GROUP?
This is totally possible in Telegram! Scale and security has been its forte. You can add upto 100,000 people on a group. (That’s almost the population of Seychelles.) With more people, it’s going to be difficult to track conversations. But that’s where Telegram differentiates. It brings a special set of features to moderate, pace and define roles of members in the group.
DO YOU WISH TO FEEL SECURE WHILE CHATTING?
Duh. Nobody asks this question cause many are busy spreading misinformation. But as a rational person who has the choice to support a platform that takes your privacy and security seriously, you ought to embrace this app. Their 2FA and end-to-end encryption are solid. You can share confidential information through a feature called Secret Chat that prevents people from taking screenshots, recording the screen and even self-destructs the chat content. Pretty neat huh.
Recently, the Russian government wanted to take a peek into the conversations of Telegram users and requested for their encryption keys. Telegram won everyone’s heart by declining to share.
ARE YOU CURIOUS TO KNOW HOW TELEGRAM PAYS ITS EMPLOYEES?
You can love an app for giving you your daily dose of dopamine, business and social prestige but there’s always an invisible trade-off called the business model. Something that works in the background to keep the company afloat and pay its bills.
At this point, it’s unclear how WhatsApp is a profitable purchase to Facebook. Recent developments like Libra indicate it could involve cryptocurrency in the future. Telegram is clearly pro-crypto and many people who are into Telegram trade cryptocurrencies. They’ve had the pre-ICO as a private affair among its users with deep pockets.
DO YOU LIKE USING STICKERS?
You’ve not really used stickers if you’ve not tried Telegram. It’s one of those vanity features I’m so fond of that sometimes I send stickers to myself. 🤭
